THE FIRE

Picture
You can’t stop art.

In April, 2024, Maritza’s studio was destroyed by an electrical fire. The result was the loss of many of her artworks, plus all of her books, equipment, and supplies. The building behind her house was a total loss except for the concrete slab.

But you can’t stop art.

There was never any hesitation. After the Memphis Fire Department put out the flames and the shock wore off, Maritza immediately started planning how she would restart her life’s passion. She would keep making her art as the studio was rebuilt. She would replenish supplies. And she would celebrate the comeback with an exhibition that examined the conflagration, the recovery, and the extraordinary roster of friends, artists, neighbors, and family who helped her rise from the ashes.

On February 7th, “RISE FROM THE ASHES” opened at Crosstown Arts in Memphis.

Because you can’t stop art.

The exhibition revealed what had burned down and what rose up from the destruction. And there’s more: The fantastic space at Crosstown will also have works by three other powerful artists. “Supernatural Telescope” with works of life and the spirit by Danielle Sierra; “A Journey into the Shadows” with provocative pieces and installations by Nelson Gutierrez; and “With the Colors of the Caribbean” featuring profound paintings by Cuban artist Juan Roberto Murat Salas.
There will also be live music, a special menu by Chef Kevin Sullivan of Kitchen Laurel and a “Frosted Citrine” complimentary cocktail from Art Bar. The event is free and open to the public. (Because you can’t stop art.)
