The theme of this year’s conference as well as our portfolio has much in common with my ideas. For the past few years I have been mapping issues related to migration and displacement. When the idea of collaboration crystallized my interest was to see how I could fuse the imagery in my work with the one sent by my collaborator.
The collaborative pieces that came from Melissa Gill, my collaborator, were beautiful transfer images of resting hands printed on somewhat shiny and transparent variant color fabric pieces, which she picked up from Korea. The resting hands possessed a very calming and caring feeling.
At that point I was working with a few prickly shapes set against abstract background. These were derived from a series I had just finished. And I felt they would work well with my interest in using contrasting imagery. My initial interest was to fuse these imageries to create a more abstract narrative. The collaborative pieces were rectangular and fairly large and I felt challenged to combine them with the two rectangular plates I was working with. It required smaller shapes and form to overcome the solid areas. To resolve these problems I altered the shape of the hands Melissa sent and combined images of Buddhist Dharma Chakra mudras in the surrounding background. The resulting image ended up being a narrative of a journey where my signature image Alice became the principal character mapping the terrain.
